How support and inspiration turned this mum’s life around

Sometimes you come across a mum whose story is so inspiring, it makes you want to follow the same journey.  Hellevi Walker is one of those mums. She has always had a complicated relationship with food where she would either overeat or half starve herself. But then, she came across The Healthy Mummy and her life changed for the better.  This is her story.

Hellevi says that although she would come across confident, her body image was always leaning towards negative.

“When I became pregnant with my second child, I was always so hungry and I thought ‘I’ll just eat whatever I want as I’m getting bigger anyway, so it doesn’t really matter’. Hellevi says she gained a lot of weight during her pregnancy. “I gained almost 25kg eating loads of sugary snacks during pregnancy thinking it would give me more energy. It didn’t.

At the end of my pregnancy, I even drafted a meal plan for myself to help me lose weight after I’d given birth, but soon gave up on that. A couple of weeks after giving birth I still had another 15kgs to lose to get to my pre-pregnancy weight and that seemed like an impossible task. The thought of having to give up so many foods in order to lose weight just made me eat more. Plus I didn’t want my milk supply to be affected so I mistakenly thought it would be another year before I can start losing weight.

Discovering The Healthy Mummy

It was then that I saw a Healthy Mummy advert on Facebook. A number of things appealed to me straight away – blurry pictures of mums in their mumsy underwear and with messy hair for example. I could 100% relate to that. It was real and that made me think ‘well if they could do it, why couldn’t I?’ I also have a 2 year old and would spend a lot of time on Google searching for healthy meal ideas. The idea of having over 4000 healthy meals in one place would have made things so much easier. So I joined up for 6 months to give it a try. Having been inspired by other mums in the FB support group I started off by making sure I drink at least 2l a day and made some HM snacks whenever I could, because my downfall has always been sugary snacks.

Losing weight

I lost anywhere between 0.5 – 1kg a week. As I was losing weight, my energy levels went up and I started doing light exercise – walking, sometimes managed a jog around the block, a couple of Healthy Mummy exercise videos here and there. It took me a while to get used to the idea that in order to lose weight I have to eat more than I normally would!

I remember doing the West Highland Walk (96miles) in Scotland a couple of years back and I thought ‘brilliant, I will lose so much weight and achieve the body I’d always dreamt about because I won’t be eating much and will be burning lots of calories’ When I got home I was so confused as I had actually gained weight! Now it all makes sense. If you don’t eat properly, the body goes into survival mode and desperately clings on to every fat cell in your body.

I have lost 12kgs in just under 5 months and I am fitter than I was before both my pregnancies. I know for a fact I could not have achieved this without Healthy Mummy in my life.

A positive outlook

Thanks to Healthy Mummy I am now confident, full of energy, balanced, organised and optimistic about the future. I love the 28 Day Challenges because they really do challenge me and without a challenge there is no growth nor change which is important to me. There is immense satisfaction in being able to say ‘I did it!’
