Thanks to Healthy Mummy this Mum is no longer relying on painkillers for crippling Endometriosis

Mum of two, Janette Turner, 34, from Loughborough started Healthy Mummy in March 2019 just after her 34th birthday after looking at birthday photos and feeling totally embarrassed.

“I wanted to take some photos with my kids but I hated all of them and promptly deleted them all.

“I had always been a little bigger and curvier than my friends. Iโ€™ve worn a size 14 since I was a teenager and had recently been struggling to fit in my size 16s and had a few size 18 jeans.

“Iโ€™ve lost 2 stone in total now, down from 13 to 11. I was amazed at how fast I saw results as I wasnโ€™t doing any exercise at the beginning and within 3 months I was back in a size 14 and 17lbs down.

“10 years ago I was diagnosed with severe Endometriosis, I was off work for weeks at a time on prescribed painkillers. Pregnancy helped with the symptoms but after pregnancy, the pain got worse. Since changing the quality of the food I put into my body my symptoms have improved, I no longer regularly rely on painkillers to get me through the day, my skin and hair are less greasy and my general mood is better.”

About Janette’s Endometriosis

Janette shares that she was diagnosed with Endometriosis at the age of 24 after many misdiagnoses of IBS, food intolerances and even pulled muscles.

Endometriosis affects 1 in 10 women. There is an average delay in diagnosis of 7.5 years and a real lack of understanding in the medical profession.

Janette says, “On a bad day I was unable to move around much, I could feel pain with every step I took. It would feel like someone had a hot poker inside me twisting it round. Sometimes it was too painful to even sit down and going to the toilet was excruciating. And itโ€™s not just pain during your period it is at any time of the month.

“There is no cure, you can only manage your symptoms and they vary from person to person and therefore so does the treatment. I spent years trying different hormone treatments, surgical procedures and eliminating food from my diet. I even spent a year in a forced menopausal state. It is physically and emotionally exhausting.

“Pregnancy was a wonderful relief from my symptoms, we were fortunate to conceive through IVF with little complications and with my symptoms lessened we naturally conceived baby no.2 just over a year later.

Janette says post-baby no. 2 the endometriosis immediately came back and trying to cope with that and look after two little ones was really not manageable some days.

“I can hand on heart say that losing weight, eating healthier and starting to move more has improved my symptoms, and since starting on Healthy Mummy I have only had one really bad day which is incredible progress. So not only do I look healthier on the outside but I know I am definitely healthier on the inside.”

Janette’s Favourite recipes

Janette admits her current obsession is the Peanut Butter Jelly smoothies. “They are amazing!! I have tried all the Healthy Mummy Smoothie flavours and they are all so tasty. I have one of each on the go and a back up in the cupboard in case I unexpectedly run out!”

“Every week I make the peanut butter and banana breakfast bars, the apple courgette muffins, and the choc chip muffins. I use the meal planner to give me ideas for family meals to try and lunches for my pack up at work.”

Janette’s favourite exercise

Janette’s says, “For the October 28 Day Weight Loss Challenge I have vowed to start exercising and so have been using the app to do and track my exercise. I love that itโ€™s not all super intense workouts and you donโ€™t need any special equipment just yourself and your app.

“I also love the progress tracking element where you can store your measurements and progress photos, all to look back on over time and remind yourself how well you are doing.”

Janette’s 3 tips for success

  1. Take it slow – Healthy Mummy isnโ€™t a crash diet or a fad, itโ€™s a change of lifestyle and mentality about food and exercise.
  2. Get onto the Healthy Mummy Facebook group!ย  The ladies on there are amazing, so supportive, helpful and inspirational.
  3. Take photos! When youโ€™ve made the decision to join, take at least one before photo. You will want to look back and compare even if taking it seems like the last thing in the world you want to do.

Janette adds, “If you are thinking about giving up I would say think about all the hard work youโ€™ve had done to get to where you are. One bad day doesnโ€™t mean youโ€™ve ruined everything.

“Restart and regroup if you have to and donโ€™t let it ruin days and events that would want to enjoy. You will find a happy medium where you can enjoy yourself off-plan without the guilt of deviating because making good healthy choices will make you happier in the long run than the junk food you used to crave.

“Itโ€™s a lifestyle so you have to be able to live your life alongside it.”

“Iโ€™m happier and more comfortable with my size now than in a very long time. I still have a way to go and when I get there Iโ€™m going to maintain my ass off! Iโ€™m a Healthy Mummy for life!!”
