The study of 15,428 people in the US found diets LOW and HIGH in carbohydrates were linked with an increase in mortality, while MODERATE consumers had the lowest risk of mortality.
Low carbohydrate dietary patterns favouring animal-derived protein and fat sources, from sources such as lamb, beef, pork, and chicken, were associated with higher mortality.
Those that favoured plant-derived protein and fat intake, from sources such as vegetables, nuts, peanut butter, and whole-grain breads, were associated with lower mortality.

If you are on a low-carb eating plan for specific reasons, exchanging those carbs for plant-based foods can make up for the lack of carbs and still keep you healthy and at less of a risk of high mortality.
“If one chooses to follow a low-carbohydrate diet, then exchanging carbohydrates for more plant-based fats and proteins might actually promote healthy ageing in the long term,” said lead researcher, Dr Sara Seidelmann.
