AMAZING images of a baby born en caul

Babies born still encased within the entire amniotic sac, known as an en caul birth, are pretty rare. So seeing these stunning images is pretty amazing!

It generally occurs in fewer than one in 80,000 cases.

An amniotic caul is very easily removed, the doctor merely pulls it away from the child’s skin and may sometimes it is even given to the mother as a keepsake.

Dr Warren Kennedy an obstetrician and gynaecologist from Tasmania, tells The Healthy Mummy “En caul births are very rare. I have seen maybe two or three in the last 20 years.

“It is no different from any other birth but it means that the sac around the baby stays intact even after the baby is born.

“It is pretty amazing to see the baby’s head being born entirely surrounded by the sac and filled with fluid. It’s as if it hasn’t realised that it is out yet.”

Sign of good luck

Medieval Europeans considered caul birth a sign of good luck and thought the caul meant the child was destined for greatness and protected from drowning later in life.

Mum Heather shared an image of one of her twins born en caul a few years ago, she wrote:

It still blows my mind every time this photo goes viral. My twin b, Dalton in his caul. The twins were born at 39 1/2 weeks into the water and our hands at the birth center.” Her boys are now six years old.
