SHOCKING study results find 50% Of Women with Endometriosis have contemplated suicide

Endometriosis is the condition where tissue similar to that found inside the uterus grows outside of it, causing extreme pain and fertility issues. The ‘silent disease,’ affects around 1 in 10 females worldwide. Half of those women contemplate suicide!

SHOCKING study results find 50% Of Women with Endometriosis have contemplated suicide

According to a survey of more than 13,500 women living with the illness half of all suffers have had suicidal thoughts at some point or another.

One sufferer shared, “The pain is like barbed wire wrapped around your insides and someone’s pulling it while at the same time an animal is trying to eat its way through you.”

The study by BBC and Endometriosis UK also discovered that “most” participants relied heavily on addictive painkillers and felt the disease had negatively impacted their career, sex life, education, and mental health.

“This shocking new research is a stark reminder that both society and the NHS need to wake up and accept that endometriosis is a chronic condition that cannot be brushed under the carpet,” Emma Cox, CEO of Endometriosis UK said of the research.

“Without investment in research, a reduction in diagnosis time – which averages at a shocking 7.5 years – and better access to pain management, women will continue to face huge barriers in accessing the right treatment at the right time.”

“The potentially devastating impact this condition can have on people’s physical and mental health cannot be overstated,” she added.

A Westminster Hall debate on Endometriosis in the workplace occurred this week, watch below to see what the government are doing to try and help women suffering in the workplace.

There are a number of different employment rights which may be important for women who suffer from endometriosis.

Endometriosis UK, a leading charity, produced a helpful guide for employers which provides an overview of the relevant employment laws and the issues that can arise in the context of endometriosis.

It raises three areas of employment law in particular:

  • The duty to make reasonable adjustments
  • Statutory sick pay
  • Flexible working

Mum PAIN-FREE from Endometriosis thanks to The Healthy Mummy

Jude, 47, from Portsmouth has been following The Healthy Mummy 28 Day Weight Loss Challenge since April 2018, she has lost 12 pounds.

Jude shares, “I had unknown Endometriosis prior to conceiving, which was preventing pregnancy. I only found out I had it when they did a laparoscopy for fertility investigations. They removed it but after having my daughter it gradually got really, really bad, to the point that I could hardly walk or even move without being in severe pain.

“I’d walk around hunched over holding my lower belly (which was swollen and bloated) to try and stop any jolting as every footstep hurt. Even sitting back down was like getting a jolt of electricity. In addition, I had random stabbing pains throughout my torso even right up into my shoulders from patches of it!

“It literally stopped me from living for about 5-8 days of the month – every 26 days!!! So I was losing nearly a third of my life to it. I was so unhappy and missing the best days of my life with my little girl. I ended up on anti-depressants as I was so low and my weight ballooned to the heaviest I’d ever been.”

Joining The Healthy Mummy 28 Day Weight Loss Challenge made a HUGE difference!

Jude shares that within 4-6 weeks of following The Healthy Mummy back in 2018 she had two completely clear cycles with no pain and bloating.

“Crazily I didn’t attribute it to my healthier lifestyle and I’d lost some weight and felt great but I slipped back into old habits then a few months later it was back with a vengeance the weight went back on and I was at rock bottom.

“I couldn’t understand it but then IT CLICKED and I realised it must have been my diet/lifestyle as that was the only thing that had changed in unison.”

“I got straight back on The Healthy Mummy 28 Day Weight Loss Challenge. Since then I am pain-free and practically medication free (last leg of weaning off anti-depressant’s at the moment) and I can’t tell you the relief and freedom and exhilaration that gives me.”

This Mum is no longer relying on painkillers for crippling Endometriosis

Mum of two, Janette Turner, 34, from Loughborough started Healthy Mummy in March 2019. Janette is no longer suffering from crippling pain with her Endometriosis thanks to The Healthy Mummy 28 Day Weight Loss Challenge.

“On a bad day I was unable to move around much, I could feel pain with every step I took. It would feel like someone had a hot poker inside me twisting it round. Sometimes it was too painful to even sit down and going to the toilet was excruciating. And it’s not just pain during your period it is at any time of the month.”

“10 years ago I was diagnosed with severe Endometriosis, I was off work for weeks at a time on prescribed painkillers. Pregnancy helped with the symptoms but after pregnancy, the pain got worse.

“Since changing the quality of the food I put into my body my symptoms have improved, I no longer regularly rely on painkillers to get me through the day, my skin and hair are less greasy and my general mood is better.”

“Losing weight, eating healthier and starting to move more has improved my symptoms, and since starting on Healthy Mummy 28 Day Weight Loss Challenge I have only had the one really bad day which is incredible progress.”

Symptoms of endometriosis

The most common symptoms associated with endometriosis are:

  • Painful periods
  • Pain before period
  • Pain during ovulation
  • Lower back pain
  • Pain during and after sex
  • Pain with bowel movements
  • Pain when having a wee
  • Abnormal bleeding is linked as well, like super heavy periods, or spotting.

Some women, however, do not experience any of these symptoms and only find out when they unsuccessfully try to conceive a baby.

Treatment of endometriosis

Ablation or removal of adhesions is an effective treatment for stage I and II endometriosis.

There are very few natural-based medicines that are “evidence-based” treatments for endometriosis. Acupuncture and TCM and Mediterranean style anti-inflammatory diet may help. (We have lots of great anti-inflammatory choices on the 28 Day Weight Loss Challenge)

Traditional herbal medicine may also help reduce symptoms such as cramping and inflammation and help balance hormones.
