This mum shares how the Healthy Mummy helped her overcome depression and learn to love her body

At the Healthy Mummy, we know that the way we feel about ourselves and treat our bodies, has a huge impact on how we feel mentally. Mental and physical health go hand in hand and often, when one isn’t working for us, the wheels will fall off the other one.
That was Amy Bunce’s experience.
Mother-of-two Amy is a long-time sufferer of anxiety and depression. And the way she felt mentally was directly linked to how she felt about her body.
Over the years, Amy has tried many different ways of coping with her mental health. Nothing had stuck, until she found the Healthy Mummy, and her mental and physical health took a turn for the better.

Following the fads

“I’ve suffered with depression and anxiety for as long as I can remember,” says Amy. “I hated the way I looked and would hide my true self from pretty much everyone. I had no self worth at all.”

Losing weight, Amy decided, would be the best way to feel better about herself. To do so, she turned to a fad diet. “I lost weight in a really unhealthy and unsustainable way,” remembers Amy. “I had no energy, and still had zero body confidence.” She had achieved her goal of losing weight but in doing so, had become obsessed with the number on the scale.

Falling ill and a realisation

Amy soon became very unwell. So unwell that she required surgery and ended up unhappy and in pain. She turned to food for coping and comfort and soon found that she’d regained all the weight she’d lost…and then some.

“I turned to food for comfort,” says Amy. “The numbers shot up, I got depressed, I couldn’t exercise and I was in a lot of pain.” After realising that she’d put on close to 5st, it became clear to Amy that unrealistic and unhealthy diets were not the way to go. “[Those diets] didn’t teach me how to eat healthy, or be kind to myself. Nor did they help me to overcome my emotional eating. All they did was starve me.”

When Amy’s eldest son was 9 months old, she started Googling to try and find information about losing weight in a healthy and sustainable way. That was when she discovered the Healthy Mummy.I was desperate to lose weight,” says Amy, “But I didn’t want to use anything that involved chemicals. I was breastfeeding and didn’t want to be passing any nasties onto my baby. This is when I found Healthy Mummy.”

Intrigued, Amy joined the Healthy Mummy Facebook group to find out a little bit more and what she found made her realise that there was another way. “At first I thought it was too good to be true,” remembers Amy. “It was promising everything I wished for. A diet plan that was family and breastfeeding friendly. One that would help me truly change my lifestyle.”

Amy joined the 28 Day Weight Loss Challenge and hasn’t looked back. And despite plenty of stops and starts, a pregnancy and the ‘mother of two’ juggle, she hasn’t looked back.  And the results? Well, they speak for themselves!

“I am physically and mentally healthier and stronger,” says Amy. “I am no longer obsessed with numbers on the scales, I am losing weight in a sustainable, safe and healthy way. My body confidence is better than it has ever been and it is real, not fake confidence.”

The Healthy Mummy Community

Amy attributes her success to being part of the Healthy Mummy community. “It’s like being part of one really big family,” she says. “The Healthy Mummy groups are such amazing places. They are full of so many inspirational women who all support and build each other up. It is a safe place where I’ve never seen a single negative comment.”

Amy knows how important it is to be supported during the journey to lose weight and the Healthy Mummy has got her covered, on all fronts. She now uses the tools available to make weight loss (and #mumlife) that little bit easier. “The way that the plan and app are designed, help to take the stress out of meal planning and shopping,” says Amy.

While Amy is still working towards her mental and physical goals, she realises now that health and wellness is a process. “The Healthy Mummy has taught me that this is a journey,” says Amy. “So no matter how many times I ‘go off plan’ I haven’t failed. I shouldn’t feel guilty, because well, you can’t fail a journey can you?”

Amy is now celebrating how far she has come and all the milestones, little and big, that she’s reached along the way.

We are so proud of Amy’s success and so glad she decided to share her story. Thank you Amy!
